A child leaving his home
A street kid is a child living on the street. The children leave their homes due to different reasons. One reason is poverty, the young people of Uganda hope of a job in the big city, most often to send money back home. But as they are not the only once, it is really hard to get a job and also one who is good paid. A consequence of poverty is, that the boys are at home instead of schooling, they work hard in the garden and in the house, so they get tired or bored at home. Or they join bad groups, which influence them o join the street. Sometimes the children live with their step-mother or step-father, which don’t accept them as family member and treat them as maid or just beat them regularly. It also happens, that the child did something wrong, which makes the family annoyed and kicked it away or the child stole something and run away.
On the street they try to survive either to collect scrubs or to steal. They find small jobs, but every street child at the end of the day has no where to stay and sleeps on the street. It can be in front of a shop, on the floor from a big supermarket mall, under the bridge or under a truck. Every day new children join the street. Through the bad situation on the street, many children start to take drugs and also to forget their past. It can be smoking cigarettes or marihuana, also sniffing fuel or others. The most take drugs to forget their situations, some have given up hope for life and others feel cold in the evening. During the day they work to recycle bottles, metals, cartoons and other stuffs to get some few money. With the money they earn, they eat two times per day and the rest of the day they spend in the cinema halls or they play video games.
The street children aren’t protected. They are from the association unwanted, because a lot of them steal. So the police is chasing them and when they catch them, the street kids end up in the prison for several days or even months. The police picks everything they have and beat them up in a brutal way. The street children under the bridge live risky, as in Uganda it has several raining seasons and the rain can come anytime and make the rivers current very strong, the river can get high in only a few minutes. Every rain takes people to death. To collect bottles they use big sacs, the most sleep in the sacs for protection of coldness, when the sacs are new, other street children can come and close it, what can take away the breath from the one inside. To sleep under the truck is also deadly, specially when you are super tired and the driver doesn’t see you and drives above you.
Salaama Miracle Ministry is regularly visiting the street children on the street. They already see us from far and wave us, they know, that we come with love and we often buy them lunch and eat with them. The street children welcome us at their ‘home’, where they live on the street and are always happy to see us and happy to show us what they got sometimes bread or new clothes. Our aim is to connect with them and to invite them to our program, through buying for them lunch we show them the love of God. As the Bible says, that we should not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased (Hebrews 13,16).
